POD: Our Class Testing out their Weather Vanes!

This morning, many students were excited to share about last night’s soccer game at King Street Turf. Miramichi Rural had a strong goalie, and even though we lost our first game, we know we’ll get better as the season goes on!

Our regular morning routine is improving, but it’s also becoming more challenging. Students will need to stay focused to finish math in the time given. Today we were a little loud and a little slow, so tomorrow we’ll aim to do better.

In math, we reviewed greater than, less than, and equal to. We worked on our daily review sheets, which included representing numbers and filling in number lines. Grade 2 students focused on finding 10 more and 10 less with the hundreds chart, while Grade 3 students explained digit value up to the thousands place. Everyone also solved word problems and wrote both number sentences (equations) and word sentences to explain their answers.

Recess was warm and sunny—perfect for a quick break!

Back inside, we had our best “read to self” yet! We still have more to improve, but getting a little better each day will make us amazing readers by the end of the year. After that, we began a writing piece on Terry Fox. I was impressed with how much the students already knew about him!

Since the day was heating up quickly, we went outside for PE a little early. After reviewing our rules and warming up, we practiced soccer dribbling and took shots on Napan’s “greatest goalie”—me! I only let in one goal, and the class is showing great progress. With temperatures in the high 20s, staying hydrated is very important.

Later, we finished our Terry Fox writing and went to the library for music. We clapped out rhythms with “ta” and “tee-tee,” then used them for up and down strums on the ukulele.

In Science, we worked in our nature and weather journals. We tested our weather vanes again and played a quick game with our thermometers to practice reading temperatures.

Before the day ended, we read more from School Days According to Humphrey. Humphrey finished his first day but is still wondering about the kids from last year. We also watched a short French video with some simple phrases. To close, we wrote in our Book of Gratitude with the starter: “Someone who was kind today was…” Then we signed our home-to-school books and had a few minutes of free choice before the bell.

Finally, best of luck to our cross-country runners heading to Blackville Park after school today! The course walk-through starts at 3:45 and the races begin at 4:00. Good luck, Cubs—we’re proud of you!
