POD: A Sneak Peak at our Remembrance Day Ceremony!

It was a warm and sunny morning on the playground — the first one we’ve had in quite a while! Setting the clocks back definitely helps; it’s nice to have the sun shining when we arrive. Even so, it’s still chilly enough for hats and mitts.

We began our day by introducing our new virtue of the month — Responsibility. It ties in perfectly with our last two months of Kindness and Respect, and we talked about what it means to be responsible both at school and at home.

After that, we moved into our regular morning routine. Our spelling words were 98, 87, 76, and 65. For “Show, Not Tell,” we revisited a previous sentence — “She was a good singer.” We discussed how that might look different for Remembrance Day compared to Halloween. Our dictated sentence was “She wishes she could sing on big stages.” We also reviewed when to add -es to words during spelling.

We completed our Heggerty listening games and maze before heading down to the gym to practice for this Friday’s Remembrance Day ceremony. The students did a great job working out some of the small details for our performance.

When we came back upstairs, we enjoyed a late snack and then shifted into math, where we explored the coins of Canada. Do you know all of our coins, their names, and their values?

After recess, our JMH reading mentors joined us for some fun reading and literacy games. When they left, we headed back to the gym to polish up our school-wide song one more time.

Lunch was outdoors today — it was a beautiful day to be outside. However, a reminder from Ms. Brown: there’s been a bit too much roughhousing and wrestling during lunch recess. Hands are for helping, not hurting!

When we came back in, a few students were feeling upset, so we took a quiet break and worked on our Reading Park app to help us reset and refocus.

In the afternoon, we visited Ms. Doucet, who continued teaching us about the phases of the moon, outer space, and the many objects found beyond Earth.

We finished off the day reading from our chapter book School Days According to Humphrey, reviewed French color vocabulary, and filled out our home-to-school books.

Don’t forget — tomorrow is skating! All K–2 students must have ski pants, and everyone will be skating at the LBA. I can’t wait to get back on the ice with everyone.

POD: Cookie Decorating (… and some tasting)!

It was a warm morning to start the day — a nice surprise for the end of October! We began with our regular routine. Our spelling words were 11, 12, 13, and 20, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “She was a bad singer.” Today, we tried something new — I dictated the first sentence for the class: “Her singing did not make the grade.” Everyone did a great job getting used to this new challenge.

We worked through our Heggerty listening exercises and maze before heading down to the gym to practice our Halloween song and rehearse getting on and off the risers for tomorrow’s performance. While we were there, the Grade 4/5 class came in and gave us a special sneak peek of their song. They sounded amazing!

Back in the classroom, we did some math, reviewing ways to represent numbers and identifying the numerator and denominator in fractions. Everyone is showing steady progress with their understanding of equal parts.

After recess, our James M. Hill mentors joined us again for reading and games. The class worked so well with the K–1s yesterday that our PE time turned into an open gym reward! There was lots of movement, music, and even some singing along.

After lunch, we switched gears and got creative with art — decorating cookies in fun and imaginative ways. There were plenty of unique designs (and probably a few extra sprinkles too!).

With Ms. Doucet, we continued learning about the phases of the moon and began talking about how we can track them over the next few weeks.

We ended the day by reading from our chapter book School Days According to Humphrey, practicing our Halloween song one more time, and writing in our Book of Gratitude. We also reviewed the skating memo that went home for next week.

Tomorrow is Halloween, so be sure to rest up tonight — it’s going to be a busy, spooktacular day at Napan Elementary!
