2025_10_28 Tuesday Day 35

POD: “A rainbow! I haven’t seen one of those in ages!”

The day began dark and rainy, but we were lucky to avoid most of the strong winds. We came inside and got straight into our regular morning routine. Our spelling words were 22, 33, 44, and 55, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “Her desk was neat.” We completed our Heggerty listening games and our maze before moving into writing.

In writing, we focused on statements — sentences that end with a period. Everyone worked hard to check that their sentences were complete and made sense.

Math time included a review of representing numbers and a look back at fractions. Instead of naming fractions today, we created them, making sure all pieces were equal parts of a whole.

After recess, we went to PE where we did a quick workout and played fun Halloween tag games. Then it was off to Guidance with Mrs. Lehnart. We talked about kindness, practiced mindfulness, and finished the session with some relaxing yoga stretches.

Lunch was extra exciting because it was Burger King hot lunch — and everyone got a crown!

After lunch recess, we came in for buddy reading and UFLI. We reviewed words that end with a silent e and what that means for the vowel sound.

Next, we went to Social Studies with Ms. Doucet. We colored the moon and looked closely at the phases of the moon. I have a feeling that knowledge might be very important tomorrow!

To end the day, we completed our UFLI reading passage and even created a brand new UFLI book to bring home. We signed our home-to-school books—which now include a note about Remembrance Day and our class picture.

We packed up, loaded the buses, and headed home after a full and fun day.

Have a wonderful evening, Cubs — see you tomorrow!

2025_10_27 Monday Day 34

POD: We ALL made it to Free Choice Time!

We had indoor arrival this morning due to the weather, but breakfast was served hot — a cozy way to start the day! After O Canada, we jumped into our regular routine. Our spelling words were 11, 12, 13, and 14 and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “His desk was messy.” We completed our maze and Heggerty listening games before moving into writing.

In writing, we learned about pronouns and how they help us avoid repeating the same noun over and over again. Our sentences are already sounding more professional! We continued to review editing with a focus on capitals and punctuation.

Math time included reviewing how to represent numbers and diving deeper into fractions with a focus on numerators and denominators — what they are, and what they mean.

Recess was outdoors today, which was a nice break. When we returned inside, we continued with UFLI, learning phonics rules for when to add a silent e at the end of a word.

In PE, things got spooky as we played a Haunted House game followed by a fast round of Zombie Tag. Lots of laughs and lots of movement!

After lunch, we enjoyed a quiet read to self before heading to Music, where we practiced our Halloween song for Friday’s performance. It’s really coming together!

With Mrs. Doucet, we added to our weather journals and talked about objects in the sky — including a closer look at the phases of the moon.

We wrapped up the afternoon by reading more of School Days According to Humphrey. Humphrey had a very exciting weekend at Small Paul’s house, watching him build model airplanes! We also reviewed our French colour vocabulary and wrote in our Book of Gratitude with the prompt:
“Someone I supported today was…”

Everyone successfully completed their work in time for a few minutes of free choice before the buses arrived — what a great way to end the day!

It was a busy and productive first day back. Get a good night’s rest, Cubs — see you tomorrow!

POD: Making Sure the Slide is Dry!

It was a warm but wet start to the morning, but the sun came out eventually to dry things up. We began our day with our regular routine. Our spelling words were 8, 11,12, and 23, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “He was a good student.” We also completed our Heggerty listening games and our maze before continuing with our writing lessons.

In writing, we reviewed subjects and predicates and talked about what makes a complete sentence. We also practiced checking our work for capital letters, proper spacing, and punctuation. With more emphasis on editing we also talked about a caret, not a carrot, so our writing makes sense! Everyone is improving and becoming more confident writers!

In math, we built on what we’ve learned about fractions. We looked at halves, quarters, and eighths, and talked about what it means when something is divided into equal parts. We looked at what the top and bottom numbers in a fraction mean. We also solved a few word problems using pictures to help us visualize.

After recess, our JMH reading mentors joined us with some new reading and word games. They are getting to know our class really well now, and the students are doing a great job showing kindness and focus during their visits.

Before lunch we logged into our Reading Park app and worked on our reading quests.

After lunch we did PE with the K-1 class and worked on being good role models. We did a quick warm-up, checked our heart rates, and practiced some of our Halloween dances. The class is getting really good at counting in 4s and 8s to keep the beat! We also had a little Halloween game where we tried to steal candy from a monsters haunted house.

In Social Studies with Ms. Doucet, we learned about how the Earth rotates and how that affects day and night. We also looked at shadows again and talked about how they change during the day. Somethings in the sky might even stay the same during the day and the night!

We ended the day reading more of School Days According to Humphrey. Humphrey learned that sometimes things don’t go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the best of it! We wrapped up by writing in our Book of Gratitude with the prompt: “I was a good role model today when…”

Everyone signed their home-to-school books, and those who finished early enjoyed a few minutes of free choice time before the buses arrived.

It was another fun and productive day, Cubs — stay warm tonight, and we’ll see you in the morning!

2025_10_22 Wednesday Day 32

POD: Everyone hard at work!

This morning we came in and got straight to work. Our spelling words were 30, 40, 50, and 60, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “She was a bad student.” We completed our Heggerty listening games and our maze before picking up where we left off in our writing program. Today, we reviewed subjects and predicates and focused on using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and punctuation at the end. Sentences can be tricky, but with practice, they’ll get easier!

In math, we continued exploring fractions, reviewing how to divide shapes into equal parts and how each piece represents a fraction of the whole. We also talked about classroom habits—like saying “That’s a great reminder!” instead of “I know!”—because learning is all about growing together.

Recess gave us a chance to enjoy some fresh air before our JMH reading mentors arrived. They brought new activities to help us strengthen our phonemic awareness skills, and everyone worked well in their small groups.

During PE, we started with a workout, checked our heart rates, and then moved into a few dance routines. We also had a little open gym time for basketball and extra dance practice.

After lunch, we logged into our Reading Park app, while Mr. McCallum worked on some student testing. In Social Studies with Ms. Doucet, we learned about sun cycles—where the sun rises and sets—and discussed what happens with the sun at this time of year. Ask your child what changes they’ve noticed!

When we came back to class, we read another chapter from School Days According to Humphrey. Humphrey was surprised to learn that his friend the frog started life as an egg! We also practiced our French color vocabulary, rehearsed our Halloween song, and wrote in our Book of Gratitude with the prompt: “I am grateful for…”

To end the day, we signed our home-to-school books, packed up, and reflected on a busy day of learning and fun.

Great work today, Cubs! Rest up tonight and come ready for another exciting day tomorrow.

2025_10_21 Tuesday Day 31

POD: Learning about the Moon

The day started off rainy here in Napan, which meant indoor openings this morning. After O Canada, we jumped into our regular routine. Our spelling words were 1, 11, 100, and 1000, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “He loved baseball.” We completed our maze and Heggerty listening games before organizing some of our work to get it ready for our binders.

In math, we reviewed how to represent numbers and then dove deeper into fractions. We explored halves and quarters and reminded ourselves that the most important rule of fractions is that all the pieces must be the same size to be fair and equal.

Recess was indoors again today, as the rain didn’t seem to want to stop.

During PE, we began in the classroom to talk about heart rate—what it means, and how to find it. Then we headed to the gym for a quick warm-up workout. It was much easier to find our pulse after getting our hearts pumping! We finished with a couple of Halloween dances, remembering to count in fours and eights, and wrapped up with our positive shout-outs before heading to Guidance.

In Guidance, Mrs. Lehnart read a few books about kindness and led us through some mindfulness activities. There were crafts, coloring popsicle sticks, kinetic sand, and even LEGO to explore—it was a calm and creative session!

We had another indoor lunch since the rain continued, and afterwards we fit in a quick read to self before tackling desk cleanup time. It’s amazing how quickly desks can fill up, even this early in the year!

In Social Studies with Ms. Doucet, we talked about the sun, shadows, and the phases of the moon. When we returned to class, we read more from School Days According to Humphrey, sang some French vocabulary songs, and completed our Book of Gratitude with the prompt: “Someone I saw being kind today was…”

Before heading home, we signed our home-to-school books. A November hot lunch menu has been added inside the cover, so be sure to check it out. Some students earned free choice time, while others worked hard right up to the bell—because in this class, you have to work hard to play hard!

We packed up, loaded the buses, and headed home for a well-deserved rest. Have a great evening, Cubs, and I’ll see you tomorrow!
