POD: Learning About the River System

Today started off as a beautiful morning. Students hopped off the buses excited to play on the playground and enjoy the breakfast program before coming inside to begin our day.

We settled into our regular routine right away. Our spelling words were mail, clay, paint, and birthday. Our UFLI sentence was, “In May, I will bake fish.” We are continuing to work on the long A sound and when to use AI and AY. We also wrote a detailed sentence about a rink, completed our Heggerty listening games, and finished our maze. Before moving on, we took a few minutes to tidy up our book boxes and desks. A clean space helps a clear mind.

In math, we worked on our multiplication stories and mixed in addition and subtraction problems. We are practicing slowing down and carefully looking at the operation before we solve.

For guidance, we headed outside for a walk with Mrs. Hill. She also joined us for some Phys. Ed., where we played tail snatch and stayed active.

After lunch, we completed our Read to Self, Reading Park, and Write to Self routines. Our Grade 2 students practiced logging in using their own credentials on the computers—great independence skills!

With Mr. Comeau, we continued working on our river system project. We are learning how rivers connect and why they are important to our community.

We wrapped up the day by reading from Captain Underpants, where Mr. Krupp was hypnotized—always an exciting chapter. We watched a French video about clothing and finished with our Book of Gratitude prompt:
“One thing I did well today was…”

We packed up, signed our home-to-school books, and headed out.

The Grade 3–5 team has their last home game tomorrow and a jamboree at Dr. Losier on Thursday. It’s going to be a busy week, so get lots of rest and be ready to roll!

POD: A Missing tooth, but Missing from Where?

We came in from outside this morning to our guest teacher, Mrs. Hill, as Ms. Brown was away at meetings and Mr. McCallum was in the office. Even with a different start, we followed our regular routine and got right to work.

Our spelling words today were brunch, brisk, grasp, and voice. Our dictated sentence was “I will stay for brunch today.” We also continued our story introduction about Nina the cat who lived on a farm, adding more details about what kind of cat she is and where she lives. After that, we completed our Heggerty listening games and our maze.

During our writing lesson, we kept working on using adverbs to make our sentences more interesting and detailed.

In math, we reviewed some of our multiplication stories and practiced skip counting backwards by tens, which takes a lot of focus and thinking.

After recess, we stayed outside for guidance with Ms. Lehnart, going for a mindfulness walk in the woods. We took time to notice sounds, sights, and how our bodies felt in nature. We came back just in time for a quick workout in the gym before heading to lunch.

Lunch today was Subway hot lunch, which many students were excited about.

After lunch, we settled in for our regular Read to Self and Write to Self time. Mrs. Hill was very kind and gave us some extra writing time, which many students appreciated.

Next, we slipped across the hall to see Mr. Comeau, who taught us about homonyms—words that sound the same but have different meanings, like flu and flew. Ask your child which homonym they remember!

When we returned to class, Mrs. Hill continued reading our chapter book Ricky Ricotta and His Mighty Robot. We also reviewed some French vocabulary, watched a short video about humility, and completed our Book of Gratitude with the sentence starter:
“My favorite thing about today was…”

Before heading home, we signed our home-to-school books and packed up.

Get lots of rest tonight, and I’ll see you tomorrow.

POD: Lego Club at Lunch has Returned!

Today was the first day in quite a while that we were able to start the morning with an outdoor opening, since the temperature wasn’t below minus fifteen. It was nice to get some fresh air first thing before heading inside to work.

Once in the classroom, we got straight to work and set up our pages for the day. Our spelling words were hoist, cloud, south, and loud. Our UFLI dictated sentence was “The coin fell in the void.” We are getting much better at remembering to start with a capital letter and end with a period, especially during our UFLI work.

We also continued working on our short story introductions, writing the opening paragraph about Nina the cat who lived on a farm. After that, we completed our Heggerty listening games and our maze, then wrote about our weekends.

In math, we reviewed arrays and our multiplication stories before moving into subtraction. We noticed we were a little rusty with regrouping and borrowing, but with practice it will start to feel easier again.

After recess, we returned to UFLI and learned about using AI and AY to make the long A sound and when each one is used in words.

During PE, we talked about being active and respecting that while we get to choose our own activity, we don’t get to choose what others do. We finished with a fun game of Olympic Torch Tag.

After lunch, the Grade 2s had their first computer lesson, while the Grade 3s worked on Read to Self and Write to Self. Then we headed across the hall to see Mr. Comeau, where we learned about our province, the cities within it, and how they connect to our community.

We ended the day by starting a new chapter book, Ricky Ricotta and His Mighty Robot, reviewed the days of the week in French, and introduced our new virtue of the month — Humility.

Today flew by!
Get lots of rest tonight, and I will see you in the morning.
