2025_10_16 Thursday Day 28

POD: Focused on an intense Art Lesson!

The rain held off for most of the day, but it sure helps to dress warm this time of year!

Mrs. Hill started our morning with our regular routine. Our spelling words were 1, 2, 3, and 4, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “She was miserable.” We talked about what that word really means and how to show it through writing. Just as we wrapped up our maze, the school filled with excitement as our soccer team was picked up to head to the jamboree at King Street Turf!

After the excitement, we settled back into our work, completing our UFLI lesson and some writing practice. In math, we reviewed representing numbers in different ways, used our hundreds chart to solve problems, and worked through word problems as a group. We also continued exploring equal parts and how they connect to fractions.

The rain held off long enough for us to enjoy an outdoor recess, which was a nice surprise!

When we came back inside, our JMH reading mentors arrived. The high school students were eager to share the activities they had prepared. I hope everyone remembered to take it seriously and make the most of the experience—it’s a great opportunity to learn from them! Before lunch, we squeezed in a bit more math practice.

Unfortunately, the rain started pouring during lunchtime, so we stayed inside. Hopefully, our soccer team stayed dry at the turf!

In the afternoon, we joined the K/1 class for a combined PE session. We did a quick workout and then got into some Halloween dance practice—lots of energy and laughter!

Back in the classroom, we had a quiet read to self period followed by a fun art activity. We learned how to draw a tiger from K-Pop Demon Hunters, and everyone was so focused and creative.

To end the day, we filled out our Book of Gratitude, signed our home-to-school books, and headed out to our buses!

Stay warm, stay dry, and stay healthy, Cubs—I’ll see you tomorrow!

2025_10_15 Wednesday Day 27

POD: Working with our JMH Reading Mentor

It was another chilly morning today—hats and mitts are definitely needed when waiting for the bus or heading outside!

I was in the office this morning for Ms. Brown, and we were lucky once again to have Mrs. Hill helping out in the classroom. She always does a wonderful job keeping everyone focused and ready to learn.

Our spelling words today were 1, 11, 100, and 1000, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “She loved the kitten.” We also worked through our maze and completed our Heggerty listening drills to start the day.

In math, we continued learning about breaking objects into equal parts of a whole as we begin exploring fractions. Everyone is doing a great job understanding that equal parts make things fair and balanced.

After recess, our JMH mentors joined us again. They worked with students in small groups as we begin to solidify our mentor teams moving forward.

PE was a busy one today! We did a challenging workout followed by some Halloween dances to get into the spooky spirit.

After lunch, we settled in for a quiet read to self before spending some time on our Reading Park app. It’s great to see students becoming more confident and independent readers.

With Ms. Doucet, we worked in our weather journals and did a big review of all the vocabulary and terms we’ve learned so far—I wonder if that means a quiz might be coming up soon?

We ended our day by writing in our Book of Gratitude, signing our home-to-school books, and enjoying a few minutes of free choice before the buses arrived.

Finally, good luck to our cross-country runners competing at French Fort Cove tonight—run hard and make us proud, Cubs!

2025_10_14 Tuesday Day 26

POD: Posting Uplifting Reminders for Others!

It was a cold start to the day, and we’re officially at that time of year when winter coats, hats, and mitts are a must. Dressing warmly makes a big difference when we’re outside, and being cold is no fun!

Our spelling words today were 9, 19, 90, and 9000, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “She loved the puppy.” We also did our Maze and took some time for a quick write about our Thanksgiving weekend and shared our stories with the class.

In math, we practiced representing numbers, solved word problems, and began talking about fractions—understanding that equal parts make something fair and balanced.

PE was full of energy! We had some open gym time, completed a four-corners workout circuit, and even looked at a few Halloween dance routines to get into the spooky spirit.

During Guidance, we went outside with Mrs. Lehnart. She read us a beautiful story about kindness, and we discussed what kindness looks like in our own classroom. It was a great reminder of how small actions can make a big difference.

After lunch, we had “read to self,” spent time on the Reading Park app, and added entries to our weather journals.

With Mrs. Doucet we talked about why it’s important to feel safe at school. Afterwards, we spread kindness around the building by putting up sticky notes with uplifting messages to remind everyone that they matter.

To end the day, we read more from School Days According to Humphrey. Humphrey is starting to worry that he might have the worst class ever—though we know things will turn around! We also watched some French vocabulary videos and finished the day with our Book of Gratitude, using the prompt “An act of kindness I witnessed today was…”

To end the day, we wished our Napan Cubs soccer team good luck as they headed to King Street Turf to take on King Street. Go Cubs—make us proud!

2025_10_09 Thursday Day 25

POD: Fire Prevention Week Assembly

It was absolutely freezing this morning — I needed both a hat and mitts while on duty! Hard to believe that just last week it was close to 30 degrees. What a change!

Our spelling words today were 2, 12, 20, and 200. Our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “The movie was amazing.” We started our morning with Heggerty listening games and completed our maze before moving on to other lessons.

The class took some time to make goodbye cards for our classmate Arsen, who celebrated his last day with us today. We will truly miss him and wish him all the best — once a Cub, always a Cub!

In math, we reviewed number lines and rewatched our greater than/less than videos. We practiced representing numbers in different ways and used hundreds charts to add quickly and accurately.

Recess was chilly, but everyone braved the cold and got some fresh air. Hopefully, everyone had their warm layers on!

After recess, our JMH mentors dropped by for another visit. They came prepared with fun activities — I spotted a few games of hangman and even a scavenger hunt happening around the room. I hope everyone remembered to stay respectful and focused while still having fun.

Before lunch, we squeezed in a short “read to self.” Then came pizza day! We watched Bad Kitty Goes to School — read by the author — while enjoying our lunch. Even though it was a cold day, we still managed to get outside for a bit of fresh air.

In the afternoon, we headed straight to the gym for a presentation from the Fire Department. They talked about charging batteries and devices safely and gave us some homework: Do you know your civic address? Have you checked your fire alarms lately?

Back in class, we had just enough time for students to finish their cards for Arsen, while others jumped onto Reading Park. I even heard someone say they’ve earned five coins already — great job!

Remember, there is no school for students tomorrow due to PL day and no school Monday for Thanksgiving.

Have a wonderful long weekend, Cubs — stay warm, stay safe, and I’ll see you on Tuesday!

2025_10_08 Wednesday Day 24

POD: Home & School Turkey Dinner for Lunch!

This morning was warm and overcast — 18°C felt almost like a summer day, although the dark clouds on the horizon told us rain was on the way.

I was in the office again today, and we were lucky to have Mrs. Hill back with us. She’s been wonderful with the class, and I hope no one is too disappointed when I return to the classroom tomorrow!

Our spelling words today were 5, 15, 50, and 500, and our “Show, Not Tell” sentence was “The milk was sour.” We completed our Heggerty listening exercises and worked through our maze before moving into math.

In math, both Grade 2 and Grade 3 students practiced using a hundreds chart to add two-digit numbers together. Once you get the hang of it, it helps improve skip counting, strengthens mental math skills, and can feel just like using a calculator! We also solved word problems — writing both equations and word sentences — and finished with some additional addition and subtraction practice.

The rain arrived just in time for our first indoor recess of the year, and it was pouring!

After recess, our JMH mentors joined us again with more activities. Tomorrow will be our final round of introductions, so I hope everyone continues to be respectful and serious as we finish meeting our mentors.

We wrapped up the morning with a “read to self” session before heading to the gym for a delicious turkey dinner provided by our amazing Home and School Association. Lunch ran a little longer than usual since we were indoors — and because many of us were in a bit of a turkey haze afterwards!

In the afternoon, we discussed fire safety and did some writing in our orange journals. We also made weather predictions and filled in our journals before continuing our work on our Call to Action project. When I peeked into the classroom, I saw sticky notes, rocks, and paint — but the students wouldn’t reveal what they’re planning. I love a good surprise!

We ended the day by reading from our chapter book, practicing French vocabulary with our “blabber beasts,” and writing in our Book of Gratitude with the prompt: “I am thankful for…”

The rain came down so hard that it washed out the cross-country course, so tonight’s event in Nelson is CANCELLED. We’ll let you know if it’s rescheduled.
