POD: Posing with her new Snail Friend!
Another wave of news came off the bus this morning—our Cubs travelled to Blackville Park for cross-country last night! Everyone ran so well, with finishes of 8th and 18th in our class. Honestly, if you finished the whole race, I’m impressed. I’m pretty sure I’d need a nap halfway through!
Our morning routine is becoming second nature, and students are getting to work more quickly. This week we’ve been putting extra effort into spelling. We’ve been breaking big words into syllables, segmenting each sound, and remembering that every syllable needs a vowel. With practice, our approximate spelling is improving. Next week we’ll be using number words from one to twenty.
In math, we reviewed greater than, less than, and equal to. Our daily review sheet included representing numbers and filling in number lines. Grade 2 students focused on finding 10 more and 10 less with the hundreds chart, while Grade 3 explained digit value up to the thousands place. Both groups also solved word problems, writing math sentences (equations) and word sentences to explain their answers.
Recess gave us a warm break outside, and when we came in, we had our best “read to self” yet! Afterwards, we began a new writing piece about “My Long Weekend.” I didn’t write one myself, since teachers don’t get a long weekend tomorrow—we’ll be at school while students are home!
Before the heat set in, we headed outside for PE. After a warm-up and rule review, we practiced soccer skills with rotating partners and team games. I was so proud of how kind everyone was—no complaints about teammates or partners. Kindness makes all the difference!
It was also pizza day, and really, is there ever a bad day for pizza?
Later, we checked over our writing pieces one last time and then moved on to something new—clay! We started by making snails, then used our creativity to make other fun shapes. Take a look at our picture of the day to see some of the finished work.
In Science, we added to our nature and weather journals. Today’s discussion was about meteorologists and forecasts. Next week, maybe we’ll practice being meteorologists ourselves!
We skipped our chapter book and French lesson to keep working with the clay, but wrapped up the day with our Book of Gratitude. Today’s starter was: “One small way I tried to be better today was…” After that, we signed our home-to-school books and enjoyed a little free choice before the bell.
Looking ahead—our Terry Fox Run is next week! Pledge sheets were sent home today in home-to-school books.
